The Sacramento Area Black Golf Club (SABGC) has a proud legacy that began in 1953, when it was established as a social club, The Counts Inc., by founding members Willie Simmons, Leon Craft, Willie Primus, George Coleman, Fletcher Scott, and Roy Evans. In 1966, the organization transitioned into the golf community under the leadership of Leon Craft, Charles Robinson, Dan Scurlock, Merrill Brown, Shelton Conerly, and Jim Curtis, renaming the group The Counts/Capital City Golf Club.
By 1972, the club officially became known as the Sacramento Area Black Golf Club (SABGC), reflecting its commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive golf culture. SABGC has since been dedicated to teaching youth the value of sportsmanship and providing opportunities to develop their skills in the game of golf. SABGC welcomes ALL players to participate in its events, regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender, while focusing on expanding access to the game within underserved communities.
As a long-time member of the Western States Golf Association (WSGA), SABGC has joined a network of over 30 clubs across seven states that are committed to promoting diversity in golf. In 1999, SABGC further broadened its reach by affiliating with the Northern California Golf Association (NCGA), enhancing opportunities for its members.
Today, SABGC remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive golf culture, empowering underserved youth, and championing diversity in the game for future generations.
The Sacramento Area Black Golf Club (SABGC) promotes diversity in golf by providing mentorship, education, and access to underserved youth in Sacramento and surrounding communities, fostering sportsmanship, inclusion, and excellence.
